Lid Sorting - A Creative Purpose

1/7/2022

Each month we are meeting at Kerang Neighbourhood House to sort thousands of plastic lids. These lids are
seperated into colour, sorted between clean and unclean and plastic type.

Many of these lids are going to Geelong to be made into garden pots through Lids for Kids. Some we are keeping for a very exciting project that is being spearheaded by the Mallee Neighbourhood House Network.

These lid sorting mornings are a fun, social activity and Patsy is one of our dedicated participants who has been lending a hand. Patsy did this beautiful collage using lids and has more creative projects planned.

If you are heading to Geelong and have room for a few boxes/bags of lids, or corks, or pill packets we would really appreciate hearing from you. The logistics around moving these recyclables can get a bit unwieldy.

A huge shout out to Tim Scriven who took a load of 12 bags to Geelong a few months ago.

Neighbourhood House Week Success

During May Kerang Neighbourhood House joined with over 400 Victorian based Houses and Community Centres to celebrate Neighbourhood House Week. In Kerang we had a number of activities planned which brought people together to celebrate.

Kick starting the week we celebrated with a Newcomers BBQ down at Akinson Park. A small contingent braved the cool weather to come out and say hi. Toni and Hack from the Rotary Club of Kerang cooked up a delicious barbie which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

We had a Lid Sorting Morning where volunteers sorted plastic lids into colours for recycling. There is always great chats and banter during these sessions and it is nice to meet new people while making a small but mighty contribution to our recycling initiatives.

We hosted a fantastic Biggest Morning Tea which raised over $300 for cancer research. Although a little overcast and drizzly we had 30 people attend. It was awesome to have Aleisha from the Baptist Church brewing up a storm as the Coffee Peddler. She was kept busy making coffees all morning and we thank her and the church’s support of our event.

Our line dancers kicked up their heels to celebrate, both out at Murrabit and at the Kerang Band Hall. There is always plenty of laughter and energy at these sessions. We are reminded that keeping active is so important to ensure our health and wellbeing.

Rounding out the week, Meg Stewart spoke at the Kerang Lions Club meeting, sharing with their members about the house activities and programs and emerging needs that were being experienced. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Without the volunteer contributions of so many, Kerang Neighbourhood House would be able to be the place it is today. So we celebrate and thank our wonderful, dedicated volunteers who, each and every day, turn up to contribute with purpose and passion.
